FAQ for Baku Summer Energy School 2012
What is Summer Energy School about?
Summer Energy School is an annual certificate program of the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy (ADA) held in partnership with the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) which brings together world-renowned scholars, academicians and policy makers to examine and gain a better understanding of global energy and environment issues and their practical application.
What are the major topics of Summer School?
The Baku Summer Energy School will study a wide range of issues, such as fundamentals of energy, energy law, economics and politics of energy, environmental impacts, and strategic management. A special focus of the program is on the Caspian Basin, including regional pipeline network development, geopolitics of the Caspian and its legal status, and the strategic outlook of SOCAR. Environmental issues, as well as revenue and resource management, will be emphasized throughout the course of the program.
Who can apply to the program?
The program is designed for anyone who is interested on energy topics: graduate and undergraduate students, mid- and senior-level policy makers, energy company representatives, academic faculty members, journalists and young researchers.
What is the class size?
The class is limited to 40 participants only.
What is the language of instruction?
The language of instruction is English.
What is the deadline for applying to program?
The deadline is April 23, 2012.
What is the tuition fee?
Tuition and fees for the Baku Summer Energy School are €2300. The tuition fee includes teaching materials, local transportation and extra-curricular activities, including field trips, luncheons and a welcome reception.
What expenses are participants expected to cover?
The participants are expected to cover air fare, visa and lodging expenses.
Are there any scholarship opportunities for applicants?
Yes, limited number of scholarship is available for applicants. Decision will be made by the selection committee according to applicant’s application and motivation letter.

Who will teach at Baku Summer Energy School?
The instructors and guest speakers are experts in oil and energy field. The program will give a chance for participants to discuss challenging issues with Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Energy Industry, and Ecology and Natural Resources, SOCAR, SOFAZ (State Oil Fund of Azerbaijan Republic), who will be key speakers along with executives of oil companies such as BP, Exxon, TOTAL, Lukoil and others. Is it possible to send the required documents after the submission of online application?
Yes, applicants can send the required documents as an attachment to summerschool@ada.edu.az by the deadline. But we recommend sending all documents while submitting the online application.
What kind of extra-curricular activities are offered?
The summer school offers excursions to various regions of Azerbaijan and unique sites connected to Azerbaijan’s oil and gas industry of the past and present, such as the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, the Sangachal oil terminal, petrocliffs in Gobustan, Mud Volcanoes, and the museums of Azerbaijan’s first oil baron, Haji Zeynalabidin Tagiyev and the world-renowned Nobel Brothers.
