Area of Interest: Regionalism and federalism, local government, trans-border relations, international roles of subnational units.
Andrey Makarychev’s former employers were Center for Security Studies & Conflict Research, ETH Zurich (2000-2001) and Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS), Copenhagen (2003-2004). He was visiting fellow at Jagiellonian University, Cracow; Copenhagen Peace Research Institute; Baltic and East European Graduate School, Sodertorn Hogskola (Sweden); Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies (Washington, D.C.); Netherlands Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities, Wassenaar (NIAS); George Mason University, Fairfax, VA; JFK Institute for North American Studies, Free University of Berlin, and other research institutions. His projects were supported by Central European University, Budapest; IREX; McArthur Foundation; OSI; NATO Democratic Institutions Fellowship Program, etc.
Professor A.S.Makarychev participated in a number of international research projects, including “The Four Common Spaces within the Framework of the EU – Russia Relations”, INTAS (project co-director); “Practices of Transparency and Non-transparency in Russia’s Energy Sector” (OSI-New York, administered through Transnational Crime and Corruption Center at the American University); “The EU and Trans-Border Conflicts: the Impact of Integration and Association” (EUBorderConf); “Budgetary Process in Russia’s Regions: Maximum of Transparency, Minimum of Corruption”, sponsored by OSI Russia (project director); “Political and Administrative Aspects of Corruption in the Volga Federal District”, Eurasia Foundation (Moscow office).
Andrey Makarychev is a member of PONARS (Program on New Approaches to Russian Security); NISPACEE (Network of Institutes of Public Administration in Central & Eastern Europe), and "Professionals for Cooperation" Alumni Association.
