Overview
In response to the growing need for Doctors of Philosophy (PhDs) who could teach and research at the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy (ADA), we established the PhD Development and Support Program (PDSP) in 2008. The program started with annual PhD Workshops in Baku, which brought outstanding Azerbaijani and foreign PhDs and PhD candidates together for academic and professional exchange and facilitated knowledge transfer and community building between the participants.
In January 2011, ADA launched ADA Faculty Development Scholarship to encourage and further support PhD studies in the fields related to the academic profile of ADA: Political Science and Economics. The Scholarship’s two main objectives were to boost research and development in the fields of Political Science and Economics in Azerbaijan and to ensure continued academic excellence at ADA by preparing core Azerbaijani faculty for teaching and research.
ADA awarded two scholarships to outstanding Azerbaijanis who were admitted to PhD programs in International Politics and International Studies at the University of Birmingham and University of Sheffield in UK respectively. The supported scholars are required to return to Azerbaijan and fill in a faculty position in ADA during or upon completion of their study abroad.

Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy has not awarded PhD scholarships in 2012. However, ADA continues supporting prospective PhD applicants by offering PhD Admissions Seminars and Mentoring Program.
PhD Admissions Seminars
ADA organizes regular PhD Admissions Seminars which are intended to provide guidance to prospective Azerbaijani PhD students on requirements and admission procedures of PhD programs abroad. Participants get an overview of admission procedures of recognized universities outside Azerbaijan, develop their skills and abilities as applicants and learn about resources available at ADA for preparation for PhD programs abroad.
PhD Mentoring Program
The PhD Mentoring Program offers a unique opportunity for prospective Azerbaijani PhD students to receive guidance and mentoring from Azerbaijani scholars abroad. Azerbaijani prospective PhD students fill out a short form requesting an academic mentor and ADA connects them with an Azerbaijani scholar who is successful in the field of interest of the applicant.
