Former Justice minister of France Rachida Dati speaks about cooperation within the EU framework
April 8, 2011Ambassador Richard Jones, Deputy Executive Director of the International Energy Agency spoke at the ADA‘s Global Perspective lecture series touching upon the world energy market forecast for the next 30 years.
Ambassador Jones noted that in the next 25 years, the world’s GDP average growth is anticipated to be around 3.5 % per year. For the same period, oil prices will rise to nearly $113 U.S. dollars per barrel.
Dr. Henrik Hololei, Head of the Cabinet of Mr. Siim Kallas, Vice-President of the European Commission,spoke at an ADA Global Perspectives seminar on the “EU Transport Policy in the Caspian Region.”
Dr. Frederick Starr, Chairman of the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute at Johns Hopkins University, spoke on current political developments and challenges in Central Asia and Afghanistan.
Niklas Westelius, an economist at IMF’s Middle East and Central Asia Department presented the economic outlook and challenges for the region and briefed on policy recommendations, including options for strengthening the financial sector and the effectiveness of monetary policy.
Former Austrian Ambassador to Mexico, Venezuela and Portugal and Rector of world renowned Vienna Diplomatic Academy shared his thoughts on diplomacy today and the role of institutions of professional training.
Former US Defense Secretary William Perry has a long history of diplomatic and political service to the U.S. He served as Secretary of the Defense, from 1994-1997, under former president Bill Clinton. William Perry was pleased to meet with ADA students and noted that ADA is a positive move toward Azerbaijan’s economic, scientific and technological development.
The Minister of Communications and Information Technologies, Dr. Ali Abbasov, delivered a lecture about the ICT developments of Azerbaijan and global tendencies in the IT sector, noting that in the past five years approximately 1 billion dollars were invested in the IT industry in Azerbaijan, of which the private sector raised around 80 percent. In the same period, the use of the internet and other communication technology, including mobile telephony, witnessed a 5-fold increase.
George Friedman, Founder and CEO of Stratfor, the leading private US intelligence company, spoke at the ADA Global Perspectives series of public lectures on US policy in the Middle East.
ADA students and staff, prominent researchers as well as representatives of government, local and international NGOs and the diplomatic corps enjoyed a very lively lecture and subsequent discussion.
Senator and first female President of the Belgian Senate, Anne-Marie Lizin spoke at the Global Perspectives series of the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy. Speaking about European integration since the end of World War II, Mme Lizin touched upon the difficulties surrounding liberalization of trade relations, judicial and financial reform within the EU context.
Dr. Norman Graham of Michigan State University spoke on U.S.-Russia “reset” policy at the Global Perspectives series of ADA. Dr. Graham talked about NATO and EU enlargement, the resurgence of Russia, tension on Poland and Czech Republic due to the anti missile defense initiative of Pentagon, and many other issues which have had an impact on the region.
