Baku,Azerbaijan-On July 1, Betty Blair and Pirouz Khanlou, founders of Azerbaijan International magazine, were awarded the Hafiz Pashayev Award by Ambassador Anne Derse and Deputy Foreign Minister Hafiz Pashayev at the U.S. Ambassador’s residence.
At the reception held in honor of the recipients, Ambassador Derse highlighted the role and importance of Azerbaijan International magazine in increasing understanding of Azerbaijani culture in the U.S. and the rest of the world in the 16 years since its founding in 1993.
Afterwards, Deputy Foreign Minister Hafiz Pashayev shared his memories of how the idea of founding the magazine evolved and how the magazine survived through the difficult times of post-Soviet disintegration in Azerbaijan, when access to any information was a real challenge.
The Hafiz Pashayev Award was established in 2008 in honor of Deputy Foreign Minister Hafiz Pashayev for his role in establishing strong and positive relations between Azerbaijan and the U.S. during his 14 years of his service as the Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the U.S.A.
Azerbaijan International magazine established four websites, each dedicated to Azerbaijan’s culture, music and art.
