Baku,Azerbaijan-On December 19-20 2009, Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy (ADA) hosted its Second Annual PhD Workshop titled “Energy Exporters: Politics, Society, and Economics”.

The workshop brought together PhDs and PhD candidates in the discipline of social science, with special emphasis on political science, economics, environmental studies and international law. Some twenty young scholars and doctoral students, including Azerbaijani nationals, from the leading universities in Europe and the United States discussed academic and policy issues pertaining to energy exporting countries.

The program included welcoming remarks by Ambassador Hafiz Pashayev (ADA Rector and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs), introductory speeches by Dr. Frederick Starr (Johns Hopkins University), Dr. Brenda Shaffer (University of Haifa), and Dr. Nigar Hashimzade (University of Reading), an official reception, and four academic panels and a roundtable discussion.

Panel topics covered Fiscal and Monetary Policies of Energy Exporters; Energy Economics; ‘Resource Curse’ and Environmental Challenges; Politics of Energy Supply and a roundtable discussion on European Energy Charter and International Law.
