Position summary
The aim of the assignment is to assist in the selection of laboratory equipment, instruments and consumables that will be the most adequate for the laboratories at the School of Agriculture and Food Science at ADA. The lab manager will assist the procurement office during the procurement phase and report to the Dean and the lab management board. He/she will also provide technical expertise to the selection committee (once the offers are received) in order to verify that the products offered are compliant with the technical specifications. He/she will also provide support in the operational set up of the laboratories and ensuring their correct functioning. Once the laboratory will be set up the Lab manager will ensure its management and maintenance and will support instructors in organizing teaching activities. He/she is responsible for the maintenance of lab equipment, its amortization, as well as future replacement and acquisition.
Duties and responsibilities
The Lab manager will have the following duties and responsibilities:
- Procurement:
- Closely work with Faculty, Dean and Procurement team for organizing school laboratory needs.
- Prepare detailed annual Laboratory Procurement Plan of School. Monitor and forecast upcoming levels of demand
- Good Laboratory materials/equipment technical knowledge. Review the technical specifications submitted by the bidders and shall advise if they meet the requirements/specifications. In case the proposed specifications are deficient the consultants shall advise what clarifications shall be requested from the bidders and/or if the specifications with the deviations are acceptable for functioning of the equipment for the purposes of the project.
- Support the preparation of tender procedures for the purchase of new scientific equipment.
Participate in Laboratory materials/equipment receiving.
- Safety: Implementing and maintaining safety standards, including chemical handling, waste disposal, and biosafety protocols. Ensuring compliance with university, national and international regulations.
- Training students, staff, and researchers on proper lab procedures and safety protocols.
- Facilitation of research: Supporting the research work of faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students by providing technical expertise and assistance in lab techniques.
- Equipment setup: Assisting with the preparation and setup of experiments, demonstrations, and practical teaching exercises.
- Data management: Assisting researchers with data collection, analysis, and the proper storage of research data.
- Inventory management: Keeping detailed records of chemicals, reagents, and equipment usage.
- Documentation of protocols: Maintaining accurate and up-to-date Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for experiments and lab activities.
- Compliance documentation: Ensuring all necessary permits, ethical approvals, and safety documentation are maintained.
- Other duties assigned by the Dean.
Qualifications
- A Master Degree in Agriculture, Food, Animal Science, Biology, or Chemistry or related fields is required. Any relevant proven experience will be considered an advantage.
- Detail oriented as well as highly motivated, willing to take ownership of certain assigned tasks and complete them under tight deadlines
- High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook, is essential
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent knowledge of English, Azerbaijani languages
- Good interpersonal skills with the ability to build partnerships and to work with all levels of employees and management
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
- Flexibility, agility, empathy, diligence, precision and organized thinking are expected personal qualities
