GOAL OF THE PROGRAM
The PhD Program in Law, established jointly by MLU and ADA University, is aimed at increasing research and faculty capacities of the ADA University’s Law Program, founded in 2018. For this end, the program envisages selecting six PhD students among exceptional lawyers from Azerbaijan, who have considerable potential to become leading legal scholars after completing PhD Program at MLU. The program will be implemented within the “State Program on Increasing the International Competitiveness of the Higher Education System in the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2019-2023” and supported by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
In addition to writing an outstanding doctoral thesis to be defended at MLU, PhD students, upon selection of the area of law, will have extensive opportunities to learn particularities of German Civil Law, Public Law or Criminal Law. All students shall enjoy supervision offered by professors of MLU Law School. Professors from ADA University Law Program will also offer complementary academic support.
The MLU and ADA University has established academic cooperation since 2018 with the aim of collaborating for successful research, student exchange and faculty training programs. While MLU Law School with its long-term global partnership experiences, including Universities from the Central and the Eastern Europe, is ranked in top five of German Law Schools in the CHE-Ranking, ADA University Law Program, enjoying its rich institutional capacities and young faculties, is aspiring to become the leading academic destination for law in the near future.
DURATION AND STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAM
The duration of the PhD Program in Law is 4,5 years. Over the course of the Program, PhD students are required to pass an intensive German language course and to follow various courses both in law and research methodology, offered at MLU. Particularly, PhD students are required to pass a course in one of the main areas of German Law (Civil Law, Public Law, or Criminal Law), before proceeding to research component of the degree. Advanced PhD students will be given opportunities to get involved in various academic and other activities at the Law Program of ADA University.
RESEARCH AREAS
The program welcomes research topics from any field of law. By the rules of the program, selected PhD students may also change research topics in consultation with academic supervisors and the program coordinator. The language of the PhD thesis shall be either in English or German. For successful completion of the doctoral thesis, each student is required to develop an individual work plan in consultation with an academic supervisor and the program coordinator.
